3. Guard Installation

To ensure the HORSE PROTECTOR can provide the best possible protection for your horse, the correct placement of the unit and the IR light source is crucial.

  • Principle: The HORSE PROTECTOR unit should always have a full view of the entire horse stall.
  • Key Areas: Make sure central points such as feeding areas (grain, hay) and the drinking area remain clearly visible, even when your horse is inside the stall.
  • Assistance: The next section contains sketches with ideal positioning suggestions.

Important Notice:

  • You are legally obligated to record only those areas that belong to you or for which you have explicit permission from the owner.
  • Recording public or private areas belonging to others without consent is not permitted in Germany. Make sure to check the applicable regulations in your country.
  • Ensure that only permitted areas are within the camera’s field of view. Information on restricting the camera’s field of view can be found in the section “Selecting the Field of View”

The correct position in the horse stable

  • Ensure that both the HORSE PROTECTOR and the IR light source have a clear view of the entire horse stall.
  • The optimal position for the HORSE PROTECTOR is above the drinking or feeding area.
  • Avoid direct light shining into the HORSE PROTECTOR camera, as this can negatively affect recording quality.
  • Ideally, mount the HORSE PROTECTOR unit slightly in front of or directly next to the IR light source to ensure optimal illumination.

Side view into the horse stall

  • For evenly illuminated images during both day and night, avoid positioning the HORSE PROTECTOR camera facing windows or other bright light sources.
  • Recommended installation heights:
    • For stalls approximately 4 meters in length: 3.5 to 4.0 meters high.
    • For stalls approximately 8 meters in length: 4.0 to 4.5 meters high.
  • Higher installation heights are possible but may reduce image quality and decrease nighttime illumination of the stall.

5. Selecting the Field of View

The HORSE PROTECTOR has been specifically designed to protect a single horse in a stall. To ensure reliable results, the camera’s field of view should only cover one horse stall. By selecting the right field of view, you can easily exclude disturbing factors such as neighboring stalls, the aisle, or brightly lit walls (see example images below). At the same time, it is important that the feeding and drinking areas remain fully visible in the frame. The following steps explain how to adjust the field of view optimally.

Step 1:

Open the ACARiS app and select the camera you want to configure.

Step 2:

Click on the small gear icon in the top right corner.

Step 3:

Select “General Settings” and scroll down to the section “Adjust Guardian View Area.” There, click on the image.

Step 4:

Here, you have the option to add black areas to the image to hide unwanted sections.

You can use bars or triangles to hide areas.

Below the image, you’ll find the control area with the options “right,” “left,” “top,” “bottom,” and “Hide corners.”

  • When you click on “right,” “left,” “top,” or “bottom,” you can then click on the image to define where you want to hide a black bar. You can repeat this process as many times as needed. Clicking “Undo” will reverse the last step.
  • If you click on “Hide corners,” you can make three clicks on the image, forming a triangle. This can also be repeated as needed.

Additionally, you have the option to rotate your image.

Step 5:

To save the hidden areas, first click “Save,” then click “Close.”

The HORSE PROTECTOR will now restart, and after approximately 10 minutes, you will be able to see the changes in the live stream.

05. Maintenance and upkeep

Ensure that the lens of the HORSE PROTECTOR and STABLE GUARD is always free of dust and dirt. The cleaner the lens, the better the images/videos and analysis results will be. It is also important to keep the IR light source clean to achieve optimal illumination.

HORSE PROTECTOR and the IR light source are electrical devices that must be kept away from water. Always make sure that no rain or other water comes into contact with the devices, cables, or power supply. Additionally, ensure that no dirt or dust accumulates on the devices. To ensure safe operation, the following must also be observed:

Ensure proper ventilation for the device, the IR light source, and the power supply. These are technical devices that generate heat. To prevent overheating, do not place the devices near heat sources, and avoid direct sunlight or strong artificial light. Make sure there is no open flame nearby and that no water can come into direct contact with the devices.

Furthermore, ensure that the devices, cables, and power supply do not overheat due to insulation or poor ventilation. Inadequate heat dissipation can cause damage to the devices. ACARiS is not liable for damages resulting from improper use of HORSE PROTECTOR, STABLE GUARD, or the associated IR light sources or power supply.

LED Status

The following table describes the different configurations of the red and green LED lights. This helps to determine whether HORSE PROTECTOR and STABLE GUARD are operating normally or if there is an error.

Red LED Green LED Meaning Action

Can multiple users receive notifications at the same time?

Yes, the system supports push notifications to multiple smartphones. This allows all relevant people, such as stable staff or veterinarians, to be informed simultaneously, enabling a quick response.

From when can the birth alarm be used?

The birth alert of the HORSE PROTECTOR can be used immediately after the installation and configuration of the system. No additional sensors or special preparations are required. The AI-powered system continuously analyzes the mare’s behavior and starts monitoring right away. It is recommended to activate the alert a few weeks before the estimated due date to ensure monitoring during the critical phase of pregnancy. This allows early detection of important behavioral changes.

Are the Stable Guard cameras suitable for outdoor use?

No, the Stable Guard cameras should not be exposed to direct rain or sunlight.

Why is the HORSE PROTECTOR important?

Horses are often left unattended, especially at night. During this time, critical events such as colic or births can occur. The HORSE PROTECTOR detects symptoms early and alerts horse owners, allowing them to respond quickly. This can significantly improve the survival chances and well-being of the horses.

What does the overview in the app provide?

The overview shows various information about your horse’s behavior, including movement, drinking, and standing. You can also check the status of the birth alert.
